Archive for Jewelry
First, let me be clear. I am very much a girly girl, and I love jewelry. However, I do not think anyone should feel they have to spend two month’s salary on a ring. A couple’s love is not determined by the size of the ring. It is not necessary for someone to go into debt before proposing. That’s actually a very bad idea and a bad start to the engagement.
On the other hand, our society has associated engagements with rings and most girls, at least the ones I know, would really like a ring to show off. I agree that it is materialistic but it is a tradition that I would like to follow.
So here are some ideas on how to keep costs down for your engagement ring.
Look online and check different stores before making a purchase. There are some great deal sites online which can drastically decrease the cost of your ring. Also by shopping around, you can make sure you get the best deal and the best ring.
Don’t do diamonds
Diamond engagement rings are more expensive than other gems. If you choose to get a ring with a gem, make it personal. You can choose the stone that coordinates with the month of your anniversary. It can be your fiancé’s favorite color or match the color of her eyes. My favorite color is red, so I would adore a ruby ring.
But if you decide to forgo the engagement ring, save your money for something you both will enjoy—a vacation or a down payment on a house. You do not have to spend your money on a ring. It’s a tradition, not a requirement.
What are your thoughts? Should we keep the engagement ring tradition?
